Frequently asked questions

At Mundy Veneer we pride ourselves on being friendly, helpful  and solution focused. Expertise in veneer is not easily nor quickly acquired but we have lots of it here! So although we have attempted to answer some of the most frequently asked questions if you have any queries please call us on 01823 666175.

Are there any technical recommendations for use?

Yes. We advise all users of veneer to make themselves familiar with Tabu's Technical Recommendations.

¬¬          IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
Before ordering please make all users of Tabu veneer aware of the Technical Recommendations for Use which are available to download on our website www.mundyveneer.com & are set out on pages 71-79 of the Tabu brochure.
In particular please note:
It is an inherent characteristic of wood that the colour will change over time. Some species darken whilst others fade and get lighter. Grey dyed veneers for example are inherently more unstable when exposed to light and they can take on a green hue. The finish applied to the veneer is of critical importance in minimising colour change. It is essential that the finish (be it lacquer, varnish, oil, polish etc) is as UV absorbent as possible to increase the resistance of the finished products to light. We are not experts on finishes, we supply the raw material only, and therefore we strongly recommend to all customers that before ordering the joinery workshop read the relevant sections in the Technical Recommendations and experiment with sample panels to ensure that they choose the correct finish taking into account the look desired and the location in which the veneer is to be used.
The dyed veneers are natural veneer which has been coloured and thus as each tree is different the grain and look may vary from samples provided. The variation in grain is particularly evident with the more heavily grained veneers such as Carbalho and Birds Eye Maple. If you require a specific look please let us know and we will try to pick out veneer that matches your requirements as closely as possible, but please be aware that no two pieces of veneer are ever identical.
The white /pale veneers such as 26.050 can be very translucent and they may require white coloured under veneering first. They also yellow when exposed to light. Please read the relevant sections in the Technical Recommendations.
For some veneers, both natural and Tabu, slip matching the veneer may give a more uniform look than book matching. Book matching can give the appearance of shading. Again we always recommend that the joinery workshop experiment to ensure that they achieve the desired look.
Please note that we cannot accept any liability for discolouration of the veneer we supply except of course in cases of manufacturing defect.
Delivery Lead Times
Natural Veneer: If the veneer you require is in stock the delivery time for natural veneers can be as little as the following day. This depends on how many orders are being processed by our warehouse and the delivery method used for the size of the order.
Tabu Veneers: As the Tabu range comprises over 300 different veneers we are unable to hold stock of the entire range. We advise that for all veneers in the Tabu range you ALLOW AT LEAST THREE WEEKS DELIVERY TIME although if we have the veneer you require in stock delivery is possible within a few days. Please work with us to help you to meet your deadlines, let us know if you think you will need Tabu veneer so that we can check stock early on and please place your order as early as possible.

Do you provide veneer samples?

We are happy to provide samples of both natural and Tabu veneers. In most cases these are free of charge. Please make your selection in the Veneer Finder or via the Products page using the My Samples link or call us directly with your requirements.  Please note that natural veneer samples are only representative of the species and there will always be some variance in the colour and grain even within a tree, which is part of the inherent beauty of wood.

Are your veneers FSC® or PEFC approved?

Yes we do stock FSC and PEFC certified natural veneer (see list of species below). In addition the Tabu Green pre-dyed natural veneer collection is FSC certified and the Tabu ECOZERO® collection of reconstituted veneer is made from FSC 100% pure certified veneer and formaldehye free glues with zero emissions.

Whilst not certified, we also stock veneers which are highly sustainable. These include Ash, Birch, Cherry, Tulipwood, Oak etc that are sourced from Europe or USA where forest stocks are growing year to year due to good forest management. According to the World Conservation Union (IUCN), these species are not endangered.

What size does the veneer come in?

For natural and Tabu pre-dyed natural veneers this depends entirely on the type of veneer. For example oak veneer is generally available in lengths of up to 2.5m to 3.2m whereas Oak Burr veneer which is taken only from the burr of the oak tree comes in pieces averaging   400 - 500 cm square. Even within species there can be a great deal of variance as every tree grows to a different height and width. To assist when you place an order we will usually ask what lengths you would prefer and pick the veneer to match your requirements to the extent possible. If you would like further advice please call us.

The multilaminar veneer in the Tabu Newood, Caleidolegno and Ecozero collections is sold in sheets.  The sheet sizes are usually 3100mm long x 650  -750 mm wide but they can vary.

How much veneer is there in a bundle?

This depends entirely on the species. Bundles generally comprise 24 or 32 leaves of veneer. Thus a bundle of Oak veneer will generally be in the region of 20 square metres whereas a bundle of oak burr will on average be about 5 square metres. When ordering we will ask you how much veneer you require. We will then select the veneer to match your requirements as closely as possible whilst minimising wasteage.

What thickness is the veneer?

The usual thickness for veneer is 0.6mm. In addition to our large stock of 0.6mm veneer we have several species of constructional veneers in thicknesses of 1.0mm, 1.5mm and 2.5mm.  Please call 01823 666175 for further information.

Do you sell backing veneer?

Yes. We always keep a range of good value backing veneers, some of which are FSC approved. Please call for more details.

Do you sell edge banding and lipping?

Yes. We keep a stock of edgebanding and lipping in the most popular species. Widths vary from 22mm to 50mm. If we do not have what you require in stock we can order glued and unglued edgebanding lipping in any of our veneers in the width and thickness you require.

What is the minimum order?

For natural and the Tabu pre-dyed natural veneers, the minimum order is 1 bundle. Bundles vary in quantity depending on the size of the species (see "What size is the Veneer?").

For the Tabu Newood and Caleidolegno range the minimum order is approximately 10 square metres but please call us to discuss your requirements.

If I order multiple bundles or sheets of veneer will they match?

We always try to pick “running” bundles when we are advised that the veneer needs to match, for example, on a run of kitchen cupboards or wall panelling. There will always be variance in the colour and grain even within a tree which is part of the inherent beauty of wood. Please let us know if it is of critical importance that a veneer matches to a high degree and we will try to assist in you achieving that aim.

For some veneers, both natural and Tabu, slip matching the veneer may give a more uniform look than book matching. Again, we always recommend that your joinery workshop experiment to ensure that they achieve the desired look.

The Newood, Caleidolegno and Ecozero multilaminar veneer range will generally be fairly standard in appearance, although there can be variances between batches.

We always recommend making sure that you order sufficient veneer so that it can be supplied from the same batch. Different batches come from different trees and noticeable variations are likely.

How do I place an order?

Please call or email your order quoting the Tabu item code (if appropriate). In addition to the species and quantity, we like to take details of the project and relevant cutting sizes so that we can pick the veneer to suit your requirements and minimise wasteage.

When will I receive my veneer if I place an order?

Samples
We aim to send out standard veneer samples on the day of request by first class post. Log samples which have to be cut to order may take longer depending on the number of orders being processed by the warehouse.

Natural Veneer
If the veneer you require is in stock the delivery time for natural veneers can be as little as the following day. This depends on how many orders are being processed by our warehouse and the delivery method used for the size of the order.

Tabu Veneers
As the Tabu range comprises over 300 different veneers we are unable to hold stock of the entire range. We advise that for all veneers in the Tabu range you allow three weeks delivery time although if we have the veneer you require in stock delivery is possible within a few days. Where Tabu veneers are required more urgently and we do not have them in stock we can get the veneer sent in by air but the additional costs will be passed on.

How much will it cost?

All veneer is individually priced depending on species, grade and quantity ordered. We quote prices per square metre, excluding VAT and delivery. Please call 01823 666 175 or send us an email to request a quote.

Can you match to a piece of veneer I already have?

Yes, we will certainly try. Please send us a representative sample. We can try to match from a photograph, however, due to different digital representations of colour, it is usually best to send us an actual sample.

Will the Tabu sample I receive be exactly what the veneer is like?

No two trees are identical thus no two pieces of veneer are ever identical. The grain will vary in each piece and with natural veneer there will be colour variations as well.

The Newood, Caleidolegno and Ecozero multilaminar veneer collections will generally be fairly standard in appearance, although there can be variances between batches. We always recommend making sure that you order sufficient veneer so that it can be supplied from the same batch.

If you require a specific look, please let us know and we will try to pick out veneer that matches your requirements as closely as possible.

Will the veneer change colour?

It is an inherent characteristic of wood that its colour will change over time. Some species darken whilst others fade and get lighter. Grey dyed veneers are more unstable, especially when exposed to direct sunlight and can display significant colour changes.

The finish applied to the veneer is of critical importance in minimising colour change. It is essential that the finish (be it lacquer, varnish, oil, polish, etc.) is as UV absorbent as possible to increase the product’s resistance to light.

The white or pale veneers such as Tabu 26.050 can be very translucent and they may require white under veneering first. They also yellow when exposed to light. Please refer to the relevant sections of the Technical Recommendations.

Please note that we can not accept any liability for discolouration of the veneer we supply. We supply the veneer as an unfinished raw material - we can not give advice on finishes as this is not an area in which we have experience or expertise. We strongly recommend that before ordering you experiment with sample panels to ensure you choose the correct finish, taking into account the desired look and the location in which the veneer is to be used.

Please read through the Technical Recommendations for Use before ordering.
